Infection Control Unit

1. INTRODUCTION

The Hospital Infection Control Unit is located on the 3rd floor, Block N (ward 30), Sibu Hospital.  The unit is headed by the Hospital Director, while the day to day running of the unit shall be the responsibility of the Infection Control Nursing Sister (U32), whom shall be assisted by two Infection Control Nurse.

The Infection Control Team at Sibu Hospital provides infection control advice and support to all employees of this hospital and acts as a base for infection control advice to Polyclinic Jalan Oya, Polyclinic Lanang and district hospitals in the Central zone of Sarawak, namely Kanowit Hospital, Kapit Hospital, Sarikei Hospital, Saratok Hospital, Daro Hospital and Mukah Hospital.

The main aim is the prevention and control of hospital acquired / healthcare acquired Infection.  Continued investment in the infection control service by Sibu Hospital has enable us to nurture a strong, experienced and dedicated team of nurses – the effects of which are now being reflected in some encouraging results.


2. OBJECTIVES

2.1.         To create a conducive and safe environment for patient care, staff, visitors, and others in the hospital and society as a whole by:

·         Detection, reduction and control of nosocomial infection through surveillance.

·         To measure the effectiveness of procedures and policies to protect patients and healthcare workers through audit using standard of infection control.

·         To determine the cost effectiveness of infection control activities.

·         To bring awareness on the issues of nosocomial infections and occupational safety to the health care workers and visitors.

·         To conduct and audit educational activities related to infection control and occupational safety.

·         To create interdisciplinary approach in implementing program related to infection control.

 

2.2          To promote actions that are designed to limit the spread or to prevent the occurrence of Nosocomial Infection at acceptable cost.

2.3          To be Infection Control Resource centre for hospitals and polyclinics in Central zone of Sarawak.
